Dr Jérôme BERGE

Interventional Neuroradiologist

Dr. Jérôme BERGE: “After completing a radiology residency in Bordeaux, I began my academic hospital fellowship (AHU – Assistanat Hospitalier Universitaire) in radiology in 1991, combined with a position in neurophysiology. My mission: to develop the interventional neuroradiology (INR) activity at the Bordeaux University Hospital (CHU de Bordeaux).

The introduction of endovascular treatments for intracranial aneurysms as early as 1991, followed in 2015 by the advent of Mechanical Thrombectomy (MT) as a first-line treatment for severe ischemic strokes, significantly contributed to the growth of our team, now composed of six INR specialists. We currently perform over 1,000 embolization procedures annually in Bordeaux, ranking among the top three INR centers in France for several years. In recent years, we have recorded more than 350 embolized aneurysms, 400 thrombectomies, 100 arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and dural arteriovenous fistulas, as well as 200 additional procedures including angioplasties, vasospasm treatments, and subdural hematoma.

The rise of Thrombectomy has enabled me—first at the regional level and then nationally, following my election to the executive board of the French Society of Neuroradiology (SFNR)—to optimize patient pathways toward Thrombectomy-capable centers. I was the first in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region to coordinate the opening of new thrombectomy centers within General Hospitals (CHG), by training Interventional Radiologists in Bayonne and Pau. Our region has since served as a national model for the implementation of approximately twenty new thrombectomy centers (“Type A Centers”), either already operational or in the process of opening. The objective is consistent across all: to improve patient access to MT within optimal timeframes, thereby enhancing neurological outcomes.
